2017 NASA EPSCoR Research and Travel Opportunities

The South Dakota NASA EPSCoR office announces the following funding opportunities which are available to faculty at all institutions of higher education in South Dakota.

U.S. citizenship is not a requirement for these grants.

Additional information and application guidelines on each grant type can be accessed by following the appropriate links provided

1. Research Seed Grants (Research Initiation Grants) (deadline Dec. 16, 2016)*

Research Initiation Grants (RIGs) of up to $23,000 (NASA funds) for single-institution projects or $46,000 (NASA funds) for multiple-institution projects are available to promote projects that align with NASA research and development priorities. A letter of endorsement by a collaborator at NASA Headquarters, a NASA Center, or a NASA contractor is strongly recommended.

RIG grants have a period of performance of one year and are designed to assist early-stage NASA-related research projects to become more competitive for NASA EPSCoR Major Research Grants or for other sources of long-term support. Research Initiation Grants require 1:1 non-federal matching funds.

For details and application instructions see:

2. Pre-Proposals for Major Research Grants (deadline Dec. 16, 2016)*

This is the solicitation for short pre-proposals for NASA EPSCoR competitive research awards. Major Research Grants are aimed at multi-institution research teams that demonstrate clear potential to build productive research connections with NASA Centers and/or NASA contractors. A letter of endorsement by a collaborator at NASA Headquarters, a NASA Center, or a NASA contractor is required.

South Dakota can submit ONE full proposal to NASA in FY 2017 (estimated March 2017 deadline for full proposal). Based on review of the pre-proposals solicited here, the SD NASA EPSCoR Steering Committee will invite one or two research teams to develop complete and final proposals and one will be submitted to NASA. The maximum request per proposal is $750,000 with a three-year period of performance. Cost-sharing is required at a level of 50% with non-federal funds (i.e., $750,000 NASA : $375,000 match).

For details and application instructions see:

*Note: Faculty may not apply as a Principal Investigator in both grant types, above. Faculty may only apply as a Principal Investigator for either a Research Initiation Grant or a Major Research Grant pre-proposal. There is no restriction on faculty being Co-Investigators in one or more of the grant types. Faculty may be Co-Investigators in more than one application or pre-proposal, subject to eligibility criteria outlined in “Selection criteria and PI and Co-I eligibility restrictions.”

3. Travel Grants (open deadline, travel must be completed by Sept. 30, 2017)

Travel Grants are available for visits to NASA Headquarters, NASA Centers, or NASA contractors with the purpose of developing research collaborations. Travel Grants require 1:1 non-federal matching funds.

For details and application instructions see:

4. Tribal College Collaboration Grants (deadline Dec. 16, 2016)

Tribal College Collaboration Grants are available for up to $10,000 (NASA funds) to support research or curriculum development activities involving tribal college faculty or staff working with counterparts at a public or private university in South Dakota. Tribal College Collaboration Grants require 1:1 non-federal matching funds.
