SD EPSCoR Impacts for the Week of March 15, 2018:
- The National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) has scheduled a webinar from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on May 15, 2018. The webinar will provide participants the opportunity to interact with members of the NSF-wide CAREER Coordinating Committee in a question-and-answer format. In preparation for the webinar, participants are strongly encouraged to consult material available on-line concerning the CAREER program. More
- With support from SD EPSCoR, Sinte Gleska University recently hosted Dr. Tim Bull Bennett as a part of their Founders Week Celebration. Dr. Bennett gave a talk about the climate effects on indigenous communities. Dr. Bennett was one of the lead convening authors on the 2014 national climate assessment. More
- Join Sanford scientist Dr. Kurt Griffin at Jim’s Tap in Brookings for Science at the Pub tonight at 6 p.m. Dr. Griffin will present “Type 1 Diabetes: Looking beyond insulin therapy.” Since the discovery of insulin in 1928, replacing this missing hormone has been the only treatment for type 1 diabetes. While life-saving, this medication remains very dangerous and difficult to dose as well as what our bodies are supposed to do on their own. Further, this approach does nothing to address the underlying autoimmune processes that lead to high blood pressure. This is the equivalent of treating only heart attacks without any efforts to prevent them by optimizing lifestyle, cholesterol, and blood pressure. More
