Four S.D. colleges earn research innovation grants

Four South Dakota colleges received grants for research to help further economic development in the state.

The South Dakota Board of Regents announced Tuesday that a total of $712,000 was distributed between four schools.

Dakota State University received $191,600 for an unclassified research lab to develop and strengthen the college’s relationship with the National Security Agency. South Dakota School of Mines and Technology received $200,000 for projects to strengthen the school’s research infrastructure, including advancing research at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. South Dakota State University received $200,000 to support collaboration with Sanford Health, specifically on Sanford’s Profile program for weight loss, wellness and fitness. The fourth grant for $120,400 went to the University of South Dakota for its germanium detector development lab. These detectors are used in experiments focused on the properties of dark matter and neutrinos.

All four grants were awarded through the state’s Research and Development Innovation Grant program as part of its 2020 vision to build a STEM workforce.
