Dakota State Teach Camp

Dakota State University’s College of Education & Human Performance’s annual virtual Teach Camp returns on Friday, June 7.

The free, one-day conference, open to all PK-12 teachers, is held via Zoom. Participants interested in earning one graduate credit for attending can do so for a $40 fee. Sessions will begin at 8:15 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. CT.

Some speakers will be DSU faculty members, while others include regional elementary, middle, and high school educators. Attendees will be able to choose from three different topics during five, 50-minute sessions. Some of these topics include active learning with technology, creativity in the classroom, using Canva, working with English Language Learners, using AI in the classroom, and more.

New this year, two employees with the South Dakota Center for Disabilities will present a session on creating safe spaces with classroom management by taking a trauma informed approach. Nikki Eining, a Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Coordinator and Heidi Aderhold, an Education Specialist, will present on the neurobiology of individuals who are impacted by trauma. They will also share strategies for developing supportive learning environments that will help those students foster resilience and academic success.

This is the ninth year DSU will be offering the camp. In 2016, through an Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) grant, the College of Education & Human Performance offered DSU STEAM Camp. This one-day workshop focused on topics of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).

After the grant ended in 2019, DSU reworked the event into Teach Camp, available online to increase the number of attendees and provide sessions addressing all teaching areas instead of just STEAM.
