My name is Cheryl Schaeffer and I currently teach 7th grade Life Science in Yankton, SD.  I have been with Yankton for 13 years in this position and previously taught everything from 1st grade through 8th grade.  I have my Masters degree as a Reading Specialist and love incorporating reading and study strategies into my teaching. I recently retired from coaching the Science Olympiad teams after a total of 13 years, 10 of which were with the Yankton Middle school. YMS has successfully sent a team to the National event each year since Science Olympiad started over 30 years ago.

My intention was to teach at the elementary level but circumstances led me to the Middle School and I have found where I am happiest.  I love teaching Science and I find teaching at this level to be always interesting, always unpredictable, and always rewarding.

Another part of teaching that I have thoroughly enjoyed is mentoring student teachers.  I feel privileged to participate in their training.  I have found that helping them with their training is equally rewarding for me.
