TAMARA CARNS

Tamara Carns | SD EPSCoR STEM Teacher Leaders

Hello, my name is Tamara Carns. I will be going into my 2nd year teaching a variety of science classes in Avon, South Dakota.  I am currently teaching a range of age groups from 7th grade Life Science up to Anatomy and Physiology for grade 12.  Before moving to South Dakota, I had 5 years of teaching experience most of which was in Williston, North Dakota teaching Biology and Physical Science. I became a science teacher after a childhood filled with catching bugs and small animals, many of which my mother had the patience to let me raise for short periods of observation. Most of my favorite teachers throughout high school were science teachers, and a math and science tutoring experience during high school inspired me to follow in their footsteps.  Other students said I was good at explaining things, and watching their “ah ha!” moments was always exciting for me. After high school I enrolled in a college in Alberta, and obtained a Bachelors of Education with a Biology emphasis and a minor in Physical Science. As much as I enjoy my summer vacations, I am always excited to get back into my classroom because I still love teaching. I am currently working towards my Master’s degree at USD, specializing in secondary education STM.
