Our friends at NASA EPSCoR have exciting opportunities that you don’t want to miss!

The South Dakota NASA EPSCoR office announces the following funding opportunities which are available to faculty at all institutions of higher education in South Dakota. U.S. citizenship is not a requirement for these grants.

Additional information and application guidelines on each grant type can be accessed by following the links provided below.

Research Initiation Grants
Research Initiation Grants are intended to assist early-stage research that aligns with NASA research and development priorities. Proposals that involve collaboration of two or more South Dakota universities are strongly encouraged; however, proposals involving a single university will be considered. Proposals may request up to $75,000 (NASA funds) with a period of performance of 24 months. SD NASA EPSCoR expects to make two awards. Research Initiation Grants require non-federal matching funds in the amount of $25,000 (one third of NASA funds). For details and application instructions see below:

Preproposals for Major Research Awards (application deadline Aug. 26, 2024)*

The South Dakota NASA EPSCoR Steering Committee invites interested state research groups to submit brief (five-page) preproposals for the FY 2025 NASA EPSCoR Major Research Award competition. For additional information, use the following link below:

South Dakota can submit one full proposal to NASA for the FY 2025 NASA EPSCoR Major Research Award competition (NASA FY 2025 Research Announcement). These awards are selected by NASA on a competitive basis and provide $750,000 (NASA funds) over a three-year period. Awards require 50% ($375,000) cost-sharing with non-federal funds. Proposals that involve collaboration of two or more South Dakota universities are strongly encouraged; however, proposals involving a single university will be considered. Proposals must demonstrate a strong connection with NASA scientists or engineers in the form of one or more support letters.

South Dakota research teams have been successful in this program at the national level. Since 2007, the state has submitted 21 proposals to NASA and 14 have been funded. Recently, South Dakota proposals were selected in the FY 2021 and FY 2023 competitions (FY 2024 proposal pending).

Tentative Timeline:

  • Preproposals due and selection of in-state finalist(s)        26-Aug-2024
  • Final EPSCoR FY 2025 Research RFP released                    09-Oct-2024
  • Final EPSCoR FY 2025 proposals due to NASA                22-Jan-2025
  • EPSCoR FY 2025 NASA review and selections                    30-Apr-2025

*Note: Faculty may not apply as a Principal Investigator (PI) in both grant types, above. Faculty may apply as a Principal Investigator for either a Research Initiation Grant or a Major Research Award preproposal, but not both. Faculty may participate as a Co-Investigator on a proposal for which they are not the PI.

Travel Grants (open deadline)

Travel Grants are available for visits to NASA Headquarters, NASA Centers, or NASA contractors or to attend aerospace conferences or workshops with the purpose of developing research collaborations.  Travel Grants require non-federal matching funds at a rate of $1 match to $2 NASA. Funds will be available for travel taking place after Oct. 1, 2024.

For details and application instructions see:

Tribal College Collaboration Grants
Proposals for Tribal College Collaboration Grants are not being solicited at this time. Expect a new announcement in spring 2025.

Rapid Response Research (R3) Grants
Rapid Response Research (R3) awards provide funds of $100,000 for a period of performance of one year. NASA intends to release the FY 2025 R3 announcement Nov. 13, 2024, with a due date of Feb. 26, 2025. No additional information is available at this time.
